“Too Soon Junior” Race Wars 2015
When many hear “Race Wars”, the first thing to cross their mind is the desert racing scene from the ever popular Fast and Furious series. This is the large-scale drag race event where Brian had to prove his worth to the Dom and the gang. It was an early promise of the auto insanity that would become the trademark of this franchise. The reality of the event however isnt far off from movie or even its Hollywood image. On April 18th 2015 in Gila Bend, AZ just like years passed a real life version took place, where drivers from all over the west coast gathered to run their cars in 1/2 mile roll race drags at the Gila Bend Airport. Race Wars Arizona had the latest 132ft wireless speed trap system that provided on the spot print outs for each run, as well as speed displays for others to see driver speed.
Upon rolling up to the event it was apparent that the event lived up to its Hollywood hype, with a mile plus long line to gain entry in the event spectators and competitors were not in any sort of short supply. Vendor booths and crews lined the pit area as far as one could see and on-goers flooded the walkable space. Getting food was not an issue if one did not mind standing in line for 20-30 min. As engines started spectators would surround the idling machine until it reached the track entrance. With a car show covering the remaining tarmac, a wide variety of vehicles were present for viewing pleasure. From bagged Beatle’s to Benz’s most every style was in attendance, the only thing missing were the showers to complete the movie set.
Although money wasnt wagered on the strip the competitive edge was still there and drivers pushed the limits of their vehicles. Many reached speeds much higher than they had ever gone before. And even though a few minor mishaps took place, overall the event went very smoothly and ran without any “misfires” were already looking forward to Race Wars 2016.
