Do UTV Tunes Work?
Your UTV is not putting out 100% of its power output which leaves owners with the task of unlocking the true potential. The most common way to increase the power output of your UTV is by tuning it. This method offers many benefits as there are a few variables that are affected when tuning your machine. Owners will often become used to the power and start to feel like the machine is slower which leads them to seek power upgrades.
Tuning your machine is a quick and easy way to increase the power and pairs incredibly well with many other aftermarket upgrades. An ECU flash can give owners up to 25HP and 31 lbs/ft of torque from programming alone. Pair that with a few bolt-on upgrades along with an upgraded turbocharger and owners can easily see upwards of 100+HP.

ECU flashes are designed to be self-learning which means if you install an intake or exhaust after the fact, the tune will adjust itself to compensate for the difference. When installing a bigger turbo, injectors, fuel pump, etc the machine will need to be reflashed. Luckily, the flashing process is very simple and takes roughly 30 minutes. To flash your machine, hook up the OBD II cable to your computer and load the tune.

What Can a Tune Do For Your Machine?
When it comes to forced induction platforms, bumping up the power is much easier as all that needs to be done is raise the boost pressure. It isn’t as easy as raising pressure though. A tune will correct the fueling to compensate for the increased amount of air being forced into your engine. If you raise the boost without a tune, it could result in a catastrophic failure due to the engine running lean. Running lean means the engine does not have enough fuel to properly combust the mixture inside the engine and can bend a connecting rod when trying to compress the unburnt oxygen.
Naturally, increased boost pressure comes with more power. More importantly, the increased torque output will make a night and day difference. Going up hills will be a much easier task with increased torque and improved horsepower will give your machine a bump in overall speed. When partnered with a big turbo and an ECU flash, owners will notice a significant increase in power delivery.
Another improvement in power delivery would be the increased throttle response that accompanies a tune. On a stock UTV, the factory throttle input seems to be a little numb and takes a heavy foot to get the results you want when cornering. Tuning your machine will solve this issue as it amplifies the throttle input and allows owners to have better control over the throttle rather than relying on the slow input from the factory throttle setting.

When going fast, many owners will notice some limitations in their machines. These limitations include speed and RPMs. Since a majority of UTVs are utilizing a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) the RPMs reach their peak very soon and this can hold back some drivers. When going into a corner the rpm’s dip quite a bit and leave drivers at a disadvantage. Raising the rpm limiter will allow drivers to keep the machine in a better-suited power range. Raising the speed limiter will also permit drivers to get extra speed in a heated race.
Owners ALWAYS have the option of flashing back to stock for whatever reason they choose. When taking your machine in for service, you might want to flash back to stock. This option is available for situations like that. It is also common to flash back to stock before selling your machine to ensure whoever is buying it gets a “stock” machine.
Most importantly the fun accompanied by tuning your machine is unparalleled. Simply modifying your machine can significantly increase your “smiles per gallon” which is priceless. Knowing your engine is running at 100% efficiency while being reliable is a feeling you will always want to have. Once you tune your machine, you will not be able to bear a stock machine ever again as the improvements far outweigh its factory form.
